Hematite and Red Jasper by DeAnna VandeZande

Hematite and Red Jasper
by DeAnna VandeZande

Greetings, one and all! I recently returned from a trip to a place that the natives call God’s Country. I spent 10 glorious days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the Marquette area. This area is situated along the shores of Lake Superior and this part of the country is home to more than 150 different collectible rocks and minerals. I must admit, I shipped 4 boxes of rocks home!

Today I would like to talk about a couple of the stones native to this area and their healing properties. The first is Hematite, also spelled Haematite. We are most familiar with the polished form of Hematite, which has a metallic, dark silver/gray finish with a red center beneath the darker outer color.

Hematite is very high in iron content, making it quite important to the iron ore industries the world over. Historically, Hematite was ground up into a fine red powder and used by Native Americans as face paint and used in medieval times as a treatment to staunch blood flow and to treat wounds.

In crystal healing, Hematite is associated with the base, or root chakra. This makes it an excellent crystal to use for grounding purposes, as it helps with strengthening our connection with the earth and helps to promote stability, security, strength and courage. Hematite is also viewed as a protecting stone, as it dissipates negative energy and prevents the absorption of negative influences from the environment around you. To help in these areas, carrying a piece of Hematite in your pocket would be beneficial.

Hematite aids with concentration, and focus. It is good for mental processes, original thought, enhances memory, and working with numbers/math, making it a useful stone for the study of mathematics and technical subjects. Keeping a piece of Hematite in your work or study area is recommended.

Hematite is a strong supporter of the timid. It boosts self-esteem and imparts confidence, aiding in removing self-limitations while increasing will power and reliability. This is a useful stone for overcoming addictions and compulsions, bringing attention to unfulfilled desires and helping to come to terms with past mistakes. Wearing Hematite jewelry or carrying a piece in your pocket can help with these issues.

Hematite has a variety of other uses in crystal healing. Physically, Hematite can be used to aid in restoring, strengthening and regulating blood supply. It can draw heat from the body and stabilize the circulation of blood. This can be especially beneficial for those who suffer from Raynaud’s Disease. Hematite also aids in treating anemia, supports kidneys, nervous disorders, leg cramps, insomnia, spinal alignment  and bone fractures. Hematite placed under the pillow at night can help alleviate leg cramps, arthritis discomfort and insomnia.

Caution: Hematite is not to be worn near inflamed areas of the body for extended periods of time, as it can exacerbate such conditions.

Often found alongside Hematite in this region of the world is Red Jasper. Red Jasper is also associated with the base, or root chakra, and therefore has some benefits similar to Hematite. Like Hematite, Red Jasper is considered a grounding and protecting stone and absorbs negative energy.  It brings about courage and will power and the ability to see projects through to the end, thus helping in achieving one’s goals.  Jasper aids in quick thinking and promotes organization, plus stimulates imagination and helps to put ideas into action.

Red Jasper is also a beneficial stone for detoxifying blood and stimulating the circulatory system, as well as increasing energy. It is especially helpful during times of convalescence, as it is considered a very nurturing stone.  Red Jasper may be used to treat sexual problems or intestinal disorders and may also be useful in treating anemia, exhaustion, and heart conditions.

Red Jasper can have a calming effect on the emotions and can provide insights in to difficult situations. By attuning to the frequency of fairness, Red Jasper offers assistance to rectifying unjust situations and the courage to overcome them.  When placed under the pillow, Red Jasper can help with dream recall.

I highly recommend adding these stones to your healing collection. Upon request, I also have them available for use in Reiki sessions or as part of a Crystal Healing session. It is important to note, however, that these stones and this information is not intended to replace the treatment of a licensed healthcare provider for any health condition.
