Desensitization
Greetings, my friends! Today’s message was a real ‘aha’ moment for me as I’m sure it will be for many of you as well.
If I were to ask you if you’ve desensitized yourself to Spirit, you would probably be quick to say “No, of course not!” At least that was my first reaction when Spirit revealed this to me. But the truth is, you have and so have I. And here’s the shocking part, we’ve been unknowingly doing it since childhood! I must admit that this realization came to me from personal experience. I have spent much time in meditation on countless occasions, asking for guidance, only to walk away in frustration after receiving no clear messages from Spirit and no answers to the dilemma of my day. Well, one day I did receive an answer! An answer to why I seemingly wasn’t getting answers, and thus my ‘aha’ moment!
Spirit showed me that every time I sought guidance, the solution was there for me, but I simply didn’t recognize it because I have spent a lifetime suppressing even the most basic instincts; instincts that Spirit uses to communicate with us. Spirit speaks to us in many ways, with the two primary ways being through our body’s physical sensations and through our own thoughts and feelings. In order to recognize these Spirit-messages, we need to be aware of our bodies and minds and the subtle ways in which they work together and are connected to Spirit.
First let’s talk about the physical sensations and how we have allowed our responses to day-to-day situations to desensitize us to Spirit’s subtle messages for us. As I mentioned, this begins even in childhood. Do you remember being a child, playing outside and having so much fun you didn’t want to stop playing to go to the bathroom, so you just wiggled about and ignored the urge? Now that you’re older, I bet this is still the case, but on other levels as well. For instance, how often does your body urge you that you need to eat, but you are too busy to eat so you just pushed aside the gnawing sensation in your belly? Or how many times have you been tired to the point of exhaustion, but you pushed through the need to sleep? And even as an adult, something as simple as the urge to go to the bathroom gets pushed aside and ignored.
We spend so much time shutting down our body’s physical warnings and sensations, that we are then numb to the messages from Spirit that are delivered to us via our physical bodies, such as the ache in your gut when you’re making the wrong decision or that hot, flushed feeling when you are being alerted of possible danger.
Closely related to these physical ways that Spirit communicates with us are the thoughts and feelings that we have in response to situations. These are the things that, after the fact you say to yourself, “I knew I should have turned left instead of right”, or “I never did have a good feeling about that”, yet in spite of these thoughts and feelings you proceeded anyway, contrary to what you knew to be true. Well, if you knew you should have gone left, why didn’t you? The answer is not as complicated as you might think; through the suppression of our senses over the course of our lives, we have trained ourselves to not trust that inner voice.
We all want that inner-guidance or intuition, but we rarely stop to think what this really means. This is Spirit communicating to us through the sensations and thoughts present in our own bodies. We have stifled that connection by attaching that inner voice to our ego and then over the course of years, through much suppression, we’ve come to barely acknowledge this as Spirit-speak. You see, every time you second guess yourself, you are actually desensitizing yourself to Spirit’s messages, because every time you question yourself you are actually second guessing Spirit’s presence in the form of your intuition.
So how do we change this pattern and become more aware and sensitive to Spirit’s subtle and not so subtle messages? First, be gentle with yourself. Refrain from self-ridicule over the fact that you have suppressed your receptiveness to these Spirit-messages. Back in the day, before we were so civilized, we were much more in touch with our instincts and intuition. This life we are living now though is full of modern distractions and stresses; thankfully, it is also full of learning curves and lessons to be repeated until they are integrated into our being, and this is but one such lesson along the path.
The awesome news is that simply by reading this, you’ve subconsciously already invited a new level of awareness into your being. The next step is to begin to make a conscious effort toward tuning into and listening to your body. Don’t suppress the signals your body gives you. Honor it when it needs to rest or eat. Thank it for giving you those messages. As you begin to tune into your body’s sensations, you will begin to trust that inner-guidance once again. And before you know it, you will be trusting the thoughts that come to you as clear messages from Spirit, given to you for your highest good, protection and happiness.
I wish you well on your journey of reconnecting to Spirit’s subtleties and in having your own ‘aha’ moments along the way!
Namaste
